As sensual and exotic as the hibiscus flower that bears its name, Bunga Raya Island Resort is a luxurious jewel set on a coral reef island just off the coast of Borneo. A secluded island hideaway of 48 timbered villas, the resort is tucked away on a tranquil and hidden bay framed by crescent shaped white sand beach on one side and the centuries old virgin jungle on the other. Each private villa is rough hewn and hand-crafted by local tradesmen, terraced into the hillside reflecting the traditional simplicity of the Borneo architectural style, blending seamlessly with the comforts and needs of the most sophisticated and discerning luxury traveller.

Pros: Everything, the staff especially were above and beyond anything I have ever experienced, truly lovely and helpful people, I made good friends here. Cons: If anything could be improved I found the drinks and food rather overpriced, though they are of excellent standard, check mini bar prices though. Location: The Island is only a 25 minute boat ride from Kota Kinabalu mainland and from there you can opt for trips out to the forests, markets, etc. Bunga Raya is a very special place, for nature, relaxation, good health and stunning views this place ticks all the boxes, the island is stunningly beautiful with lovely Hisbiscus flowers growing everywhere and what impressed me also was that the creatures live side by side with the islanders. The staff are outstanding with their helpfulness and friendliness, already I am thinking of returning as I loved it so much, there is a swing on the beach which I enjoyed daily, an infinity pool, snorkelling, gym, canopy walking, so much to do here, it is perfection and you wont want to leave. To sum up, this island is a wonderful, natural jewel in the ocean.

The hotel setting is stunning with beautiful untouched rainforest and lovely beach. The grounds, pool, restaurant are all great however the villas are in major need of renovating. The wood is rotting, the bedding is mouldy and the smell is really musty in all the rooms. It's a shame as everything else was great. The staff were lovely, food generally good, although the service in the restaurant needs improving. If the villas are renovated I would consider returning.
