Urinary tract infection occurs more commonly in women than in men. Gleneagles Medical Centre Penang consultant urologist Dr Ooi Chong Chien said this was because the urethra in women is very short, about 2cm to 3cm. Dr Ooi said it is very easy for bacteria to enter from outside the body and enter the bladder. As a woman grows older, the reproductive organs such as the uterus and vagina become dryer, hence, it is easier for bacteria to be around there. Dr Ooi was giving a talk on Common Urology Presentation and Management at FitForLife Fair Penang 2015 on Saturday. Dr Ooi said it was quite difficult for bacteria from outside the body to enter a man's bladder via the urethra, because the urinary tract was longer, about 20cm to 25cm long.
