Mr. Ravi graduated from University Science Malaysia (USM) in 1990 and obtained his postgraduate specialist qualification as a general surgeon from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1999. He was attached to the government service for 18 years including 2 years in the Armed Forces. He then received his general surgical and subspeciality training in various departments (General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery, Breast & Endocrine and Vascular besides Neurosurgery) in Hospital Ipoh and Hospital Kuala Lumpur. He worked in Neurosurgery for about 1 year plus from 1997 and 1998 and decided to settle in Neurosurgery after his fellowship.

He was gazetted a Neurosurgeon after 3 years of subspeciality training which included his one year of 'Clinical Fellowship' in the 'Southern General Hospital' in Glasgow which is recognized as the birthplace of "Glasgow Coma Scale'. His last posting was as the Head of Department at Hospital Pulau Pinang (formerly Penang General Hospital) where he served from 2004 till 2008. He managed to set up the first 'Neurosurgical ICU' independent of the General ICU, outside of Kuala Lumpur in 2006. It is only 5 bedded and still functioning today.

During his training in Glasgow, he was trained in the field of mainly 'spinal' and 'vascular' neurosurgery. While he was in Penang, he completed his training in the field of 'Radiosurgery' in Berlin and was then actively performing SRS (Stereotactic RadioSurgery) and SRT (Stereotactic RadioTherapy) for patients with brain tumours at Mount Miriam Hospital which was the only center providing this service then. He hopes to continue this service which is now available at Gleneagles Penang.

He also has completed the CMIA (Certified Medical Impairment Assessors) training and passed the exams held by the NIOSH division under the SOCSO group. This helps him assess medical litigation cases and prepare reports for lawyers as well as insurance companies.

His main interest has been in the management of head injuries, stroke patients and tumour (brain or spine) patients. This includes post-operative ICU care and neuro-rehabilitation to improve the outcome of these patients through physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, various methods of patient stimulation and family or caregiver training.

He also has vast experience in managing other general neurological diseases which include vascular and spinal problems. He has a good working relationship with an Interventional Radiologist to help with Endovascular treatment of aneurysms or AVMs (ArterioVenous Malformation).

Mr. Ravi has published a few journal articles, presented in numerous meetings and has trained quite a number of young neurosurgeons who are now working mainly in the universities and government sectors with a select few in private practice.

Mr. Ravi is registered with the Malaysian National Specialist Register as a Consultant Neurosurgeon and he has been an honorary lecturer at the Perak Medical College and Penang College of Medicine during his tenure as a government servant in Ipoh and Penang.
